There’s a New Spring in JJ Valaya’s step
For
Fashion Designer J J Valaya, the designs for spring-summer collection
this year depict the season in full bloom. Different varieties of
flowers, placed interestingly on Indian and western garments abound
in the creations of the designer. And Valaya is set to unveil this
collection celebrating nature at the vatika First India Place, Sushant
Lok Phase I, Gurgaon on march6.
“With the arrival of the spring, the surroundings will be
laden with lovely flowers. I felt like experimenting with flowers.
There are five collections and each has a different floral interpretation.
For example, there is an antique Persian carpet flower motif or
a motif inspired by a contemporary painting or the specie in a graphic
form,” says the 34 year old designer.
This graduate from the National Institute of Fashion Technology
has won awards by dozen. He was the first Indian student to win
the Prix d’Incitation at Paris; the Elyxa Award at NIFT for
the most innovative use of fabric and the first prize at the NIFT
alumni competition. Apart from these, proudly (as he pulls out a
photograph of Rohit Khosla) that he was “the first and only
trainee of the brilliant fashion guru Rohit Khosla. After that he
only employed assistants.”
Valaya has made a mark for himself in the trousseau market with
his lavish use of zardozi and swarovski crystals (no wonder the
Austrian company has appointed him as their only brand ambassador
